KAAN TURKISH FIGHTER JET
ABOUT THE PROJECT

The “KAAN Project for the Development of National Fighter Aircraft aims to design and manifacture a next-generation fighter jet, starting from the end of the 2020s, to replace the F-16 aircraft. The Project also aims to ensure compatibility with other relevant aerial vehicles and platforms in Türkiye’s inventory. The goal is to enhance Türkiye’s capabilities in 5th generation fighter aircraft, positioning our country among a limited number of global players. KAAN will incorporate advanced technological features such as low observability, internal weapon bays, high maneuverability, enhanced situational awareness and sensor fusion, providing superior capabilities for both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

Türkiye’s national aerospace company TUSAŞ is the prime contractor for the Project. Phase-I, Stage-I of the Project, including the Preliminary Design activities, commenced on September 17, 2018, following a contract signed on August 5, 2016. The Preliminary Design Review (PDR) milestone was achieved by early 2023.

The Project emphasizes utilization of domestic industry to maximum extent, focusing on original design activities, including technology development and localization for critical subsystems.

On March 18, 2023, KAAN successfully performed its first engine start-up and taxiing activity. The engineering prototype’s maiden flight of KAAN is targeted for the end of 2023.
